The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea, known in ancient times as the Salt Sea, holds a unique place in biblical geography and Christian history. Located at the lowest land elevation on Earth, over 1,300 feet below sea level, the Dead Sea is situated between the land of Judah to the west and Moab to the east. Its waters are exceptionally salty—nearly ten times saltier than the ocean—making it inhospitable to fish and aquatic life, hence the name “Dead.” Yet despite its lifeless waters, the region around the Dead Sea has been alive with spiritual significance since ancient times.
